What is a Heuriger wine?
Wine from the current season is called a heuriger. Heurigen wines are light and easy to drink and may only be called that until November 11 of the same year. Winegrowers are allowed to serve wine from their own cultivation in a so-called Buschenschank.
The Viennese Heurigen culture was included in the national UNESCO list of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage in 2019 because of its special cultural significance.
The Viennese Heurigen wines are often made from the so-called “mixed set”. This refers to an original Viennese wine variety, which is made up of at least three different white vines, which were grown, harvested, and pressed together in the same vineyard.
These Viennese wines are grown on the 332-meter-high Nussberg and on the 484-meter-high Kahlenberg in the 19th district of Vienna.
Where are the Top Vienna Heurigen locations
- Oberlaa, Ottakring, Hernals.

The Bisamberg wines are pressed in Stammersdorf, Strebersdorf, and Jedlersdorf, in the south of Vienna there are the wine towns of Oberlaa and Mauer.
Where is wine grown in Vienna?
Around half of Vienna’s wine-growing region, covering an area of 350 hectares is located in the northwest of the city. This lies on the slopes of the Kahlenberg and the Nussberg with the wine-growing towns of Nussdorf, Grinzing, Sievering, Heiligenstadt, Neustift am Walde, and Salmannsdorf.
What wine to drink at a Viennese Heuriger?
Gemischter Satz wine in Austria. The Gemischter Satz is a wine specialty made from up to twenty white or red grape varieties with different ripening times and different degrees of acidity, which are planted in the vineyard and harvested, pressed, and fermented together.
What is a Gemischter Satz in wine?
The Gemischter Satz – a Viennese specialty
A special feature among the Viennese wines is the so-called “Gemischter Satz“. As early as the 19th century, when in most other Austrian wine-growing regions mass producers were more popular, the focus in Vienna was on noble grape varieties such as Riesling, Rotgipfler, Pinot Blanc, and Traminer. These were planted out and mixed with several other varieties in the vineyard.
This not only resulted in very multi-layered and complex wines that could combine a wide variety of properties such as freshness, fruitiness, or full-body, but the winegrower also always had a relatively reliable yield: Due to the different flowering times of the varieties, adverse weather conditions never led to an effect during the flowering period a total loss of the harvest, but at most to losses with certain varieties. After this mixed set had eked out a shadowy existence as a simple tap wine at Heurigen for a very long time, it has now been experiencing a renaissance for several years. This particularly typical and characteristic Viennese wine is filled into the Bouteille both as a light, drinkable drop and in the form of a powerful and complex top wine.
What is the difference between a Cuvée wine and a Gemischter Satz?
In a Gemischter Satz, as the name suggests, different grape varieties are planted in a vineyard. The grapes are harvested and processed together.
In a cuvée, finished wines are blended in order to achieve perfect wine enjoyment.
What is a typical Viennese wine specialty?
Viennese Gemischter Satz. Vienna Wine: Six winegrowers, one city, one passion. The traditional Viennese wine specialty – Gemischter Satz – is on everyone’s lips again. This is thanks to the tireless commitment of the “WienWein” winegrowers.
What is the total number of Heurigen in Vienna?
The number of Heurigen registrations at the municipal district offices was 91 Heurigen in 2020. Including those commercial Heurigen that also sell their own wine, we estimate the total number of wine taverns in Vienna, regardless of their type of business, to be around 100.
What are the Top Wine events in Vienna?

Weinfrühling
The wine spring begins in mid-March with the opening of the Heurigen gardens, wine tastings, grape blossom hikes, and musical events at the Heurigen, from jazz brunch to folk and Schrammel music evenings.
