The Albertina Museum Location (Albertina Palace)

The former Palais Taroucca is located in the very heart of Vienna and is built on the Augustinian Bastion, one of the last remaining sections of the fortifications of Vienna. After extensive renovations, it was opened to the public as the “Albertina Museum” in 2008.

Albertina Museum is located close to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Vienna Hofburg, allowing great views of outstanding Viennese architecture like the Vienna State Opera and Albertina Platz.

The 20 Albertina Habsburg Staterooms – Inside Tour

On over two floors of the Albertina Palace, you can explore the 20 originally furnished and detailed refurbished Habsburg Staterooms. After decades of holding diverse functions such as depots, office space, etc., today the rooms are restored to their artful ancient style that was created back in 1822.

The restoration included the return of the original furniture and allowed visitors to feel the spirit of the Habsburg Dynasties that lived in the palace in former times!

The Albertina offers different permanent collections that offer interesting and meaningful art pieces to all types of visitors.

The Batliner Collection – from MONET TO PICASSO

One of the largest private collections of classical modernist paintings is shown in the Albertina Museum. A permanent loan by Rita and Herbert Batliner, compiled since the 1960s, forms the substantial core of the permanent exhibits – offering about 500 fascinating paintings representing a long history of art – stretching from French impressionism through the present.

The Graphic Arts Collection

With over 950.000 drawings and graphic artworks, one of the most extensive collections can be found in Albertina Museum. Starting with Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Albrecht Dürer, Paul Rubens, and Paul Cezanne the adventure leads the visitor to names like Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt or Oskar Kokoschka and Andy Warhol, and many more….start with Dürer’s famous ‘Young Hare’ and get inspired by the fantastic range of art pieces to see more…..!

The Architectural Collection

Plans and models from the estates of famous architects like Adolf Loos, Fischer von Erlach, Otto Wagner, and many more are featured providing comprehensive insights to the visitor.

The Photographic Collection

The Albertina Museum is at the heart of Vienna’s inner city between the Vienna State Opera, Kärntnerstraße, and the Vienna Hofburg.

On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, Albertina Museum opens at 9 am and closes at 6 pm.

The museum opens at 9 am on Wednesday and Friday, but to accommodate the crowd closes only at 9 pm.

The graphic art museum follows different timings on some special days:

24 Dec: 9 am to 2 pm
31 Dec: 9 am to 6 pm
26 – 30 Dec: Daily 9 to 9 pm
1 – 5 Jan: Daily 9 to 9 pm

How long does Albertina Museum visit take?

Albertina Museum’s officials recommend that visitors factor in two hours for exploration.

However, art and history lovers are known to spend up to four hours exploring the museum.. Tourists who frequent art museums say that art fatigue kicks in after two hours or so, and taking breaks helps prolong the exploration.

Is Albertina Museum worth a visit?

It is one of the largest and most important art museums in the world and is totally worth it.

Albertina has a vast collection of art starting from French impressionists and continuing up to the present day, also including Austrian Expressionists such as Klimt, Schiele, and Kokoschka.

If you are not an art lover you can also immerse yourself in the imperial flair of the Albertina State Rooms, which once served as the residence of Habsburg Archdukes and Archduchesses.

Depending on the time of the day (and month), you may have to wait in the ticket counter line for 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Students aged 19 to 26 years get a massive €5 reduction in the adult ticket cost and pay only €11.90 for entry.
  • Senior visitors 65 years and older get a €4 discount and pay €12.90 for their tickets.
  • Disabled visitors with a valid certificate of disability pay only €7 for getting into the Albertina Museum because of a massive 50% off on their tickets.

Albertina Museum Audio Guide – Is it worth it?

The audio guide helps visitors make the most out of their visit by providing extensive information on the exhibition, artists, and artworks. The audio guide is informative and entertaining at the same time.

After the Albertina Museum Vienna visit, you can take a pause and have a coffee or meal at the DO&CO Restaurant at the Albertina Museum.

The menu includes Viennese dishes and international delicacies, and fantastic coffee and cake from DEMEL, the former purveyors to the imperial and royal court.
