We took the opportunity to stay for 3 days at the Schlosshotel Mittersill in Salzburg. Just a couple of days off, enjoying the beautiful Alps mountain area combined with relaxation in the hotel SPA.

Here is all about our experience at the Schloss Mittersill Hotel.

The Castle Hotel is situated on a hill and offers stunning panoramic views of the Kitzbühel mountains in the National Park Hohen Tauern. A perfect starting point for cultural and sports enthusiasts who enjoy outdoor activities and love hiking in summer or winter sports in the colder months.

The entrance was pretty impressive with its two stone pillars and after a couple of steep curves we finally arrived at the spacious parking area of the Castle. We decided to leave our bags in the car, which was a good idea, as the registration was located 2 floors up, later we found out there was a lift …The hostess initially warmly welcomed us in a traditional dirndl and escorted us to a sophisticated lounge, where we sat on antique sofas covered in red velvet and were offered a glass of cold sparkling wine. What a nice start into the weekend especially after such a long journey.  The staff was very friendly and competent which made the check-in a very pleasant start. Later on, we had the opportunity to get an overview of the various amenities of the hotel. Complementing our stay was a Hotel Suite-Tour and a Castle round-tour by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic young staff lady.

History & Modern

The castle was built around 1130-1150 and suffered many damages throughout the years. After World War II, the castle was restored to its last owner the Baron von Pantz who renovated the castle and founded a Sports & Shooting Club, attracting thus the international jet set and numerous royalty. In 2009, the new owner undertook another renovation ensuring that the historic core remained while using contemporary elements thus creating a perfect combination of tradition and modernity that struck us right as you enter the majestic facilities.

A stay in a castle hotel is definitely been a whole new and different experience for us. The courses are cozy and winding, historical paintings are reminiscent of old times and the walls could tell exciting stories that have happened there since the 12th century.

Rooms and Suites

The hotel has quite a number of very comfortable rooms as well as wonderful suites.  The rooms and suites are decorated in warm brown, red and cream shades and equipped with a perfect mix of historic and new interior elements thus offering the perfect Castle feeling.

Our suite, located on the first floor, was spectacular, spacious and comfortable with antique furniture and a modernized bathroom. A huge terrace overlooking the valley and the village of Mittersill offered a spectacular view. We felt very special to be in such a historic place in this mix of old and new. It was no wonder we slept like kings in the large cozy bed.

Each Suite of the castle has its own character and has been conceived with a great deal of attention to detail. The 53 rooms are designed in either a historical or contemporary fashion. The suites are named after aristocratic, famous personalities and Hollywood stars, who have stayed in the castle over the course of the centuries. Henry Ford II., Gina Lollobrigida, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and many others are repeatedly entered in the visitor book in Mittersill Castle. The suites honor the memory of their famous namesakes, bringing their spirit into a new era. Among them was style icon Coco Chanel, who returned quite a number of time and who is said to have been inspired by the uniform of the pages thus creating the famous classic Chanel jacket.

We had a couple of hours left to the dinner so we decided to check out the SPA. Although compact, the Spa area offers many amenities such as a bio sauna, a Finnish sauna, a salt water steam bath and an Infrared cabin. Afterwards you can jump into the heated outdoor pool, which is integrated into the garden area, or enjoy the relaxation rooms with their beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Pampering facial and beauty treatments, massages and body treatments with French high-quality products are also available.

Restaurant and Cuisine

What we like the most about the restaurant at Schloss Mittersill is the fact that it has different rooms to choose from, where guests can indulge in regional & international specialties. The cook uses predominantly local products and avoids flavor enhancers, artificial colours and sweeteners. Breakfast at Schloss Mittersill was amazing. You could choose what your heart desired… fresh fruits, healthy muesli, jam, ham, salami, cheese, eggs dishes, waffles, pancakes, bread, pastries and fresh juice. Everything was tasty and simply wonderful!

Dinner was delicious, with multiple courses and many options to select from but eating in the fireplace room added a note of romance to the already discrete atmosphere. We were served a gourmet supper and the sommelier assisted in choosing the perfect wine matching each meal. And we were lucky one evening, as near us there was a marriage proposal so it was nice to see a young couple committing to their love in this very romantic ambience.

Speaking of which… Schloss Mittersill is known, for its historic architecture and good cuisine, but because of its magical Spirits, it is also the perfect location for a romantic gateway especially for couples who would like to tie the knot in a fairy-tale surrounding. The castle chapel, built in 1533 is adjacent to the wonderful garden and the panorama terrace and offers the betrothed the possibility for a church-based or civil ceremony. Ms. Stephanie Busch von Holtum and the castle team are ready to assist with all the necessary preparations for the celebration like creating menus, seating plans, photo frames for photographs of the guests, music, flowers, guest gifts, place cards etc…For festivities, the castle can accommodate up to 130 people. But do not think that the summer is the only time to wed. If you wish to commit in a wonderful winter surrounding, the Castle crew will also organize a beautiful reception with mulled wine and punch in the castle courtyard with their fire baskets, illuminated with torches. They provide also hot chestnuts and or baked apples.
