There is something particularly appealing about escaping to the mountains in summer.
Borovets may be best known internationally as one of Bulgaria’s leading winter and ski destinations, but our visit in August showed us a completely different side of the resort. Instead of snow-covered slopes and busy ski lifts, we found cool mountain air, deep green forests and a much slower rhythm.
During our summer trip through Bulgaria, Angelina and I spent one day at Flora Boutique Hotel Borovets, a new five-star boutique property located in the heart of the resort.
And although our stay was short, it gave us enough time to understand what the hotel is trying to achieve.
Flora Boutique Hotel is not about oversized resort facilities or extravagant luxury for the sake of it. The concept is smaller and more personal: contemporary mountain design, spacious accommodation, a strong restaurant concept and a particularly attractive rooftop relaxation area.
The hotel describes itself as a five-star boutique property combining refined design, tranquillity and personal service. It is positioned only around 50 metres from the Yastrebets lift, making its location especially interesting for winter visitors while remaining equally attractive during the summer months.
After experiencing it ourselves, I would describe Flora Boutique Hotel as one of the more interesting recent additions to Bulgaria’s emerging luxury hotel scene.

Flora Boutique Hotel Borovets: First Impressions
One of the first things I noticed when arriving at Flora Boutique Hotel was the restrained approach to mountain luxury.
There is plenty of wood, stone and natural texture, but the design doesn’t fall into the typical heavy Alpine-chalet aesthetic.
Instead, the interiors feel contemporary.
Large windows bring the forest surroundings into the building, while wood-clad surfaces create warmth without making the spaces feel dark. Modern lighting and clean architectural lines give the hotel a more cosmopolitan character.
That balance is important.
A mountain hotel should still feel connected to its destination, and Flora does. But it also feels sufficiently polished for guests accustomed to contemporary boutique hotels in cities such as Vienna, Milan or Munich.
The atmosphere during our August visit was particularly peaceful.
Borovets in summer has a different personality from winter. The surrounding Rila landscape becomes part of the experience rather than simply the background to a skiing holiday.
And for anyone coming from Sofia, the change of scenery can feel surprisingly immediate.
Location: A Luxury Hotel in the Heart of Borovets
Location is one of Flora Boutique Hotel’s greatest strengths.
The property sits in Borovets at approximately 1,350 metres above sea level and is only about 50 metres from the Yastrebets ski lift.
During winter this is obviously a major advantage.
You can stay very close to the skiing infrastructure without sacrificing the atmosphere of a smaller boutique hotel.
But I would not look at Flora purely as a winter hotel.
Our August stay demonstrated how pleasant Borovets can be outside the ski season.
The forests surrounding the resort offer walking and hiking opportunities, while the higher elevation makes the temperatures noticeably more comfortable during hot Bulgarian summers.
Borovets itself is Bulgaria’s oldest mountain resort and offers around 58 kilometres of ski slopes during winter. In summer, the same landscape becomes a destination for hiking, mountain activities and simply spending time outdoors.
For travellers combining Borovets with Sofia, this also makes an excellent short mountain escape.
Why the location works particularly well

Accommodation at Flora Boutique Hotel Borovets
Flora Boutique Hotel offers five different accommodation categories.
According to the hotel, these range from elegant suites to larger one-bedroom apartments. Options include Deluxe Suites with terraces or park views, Wellness Suites with private saunas and a larger Luxury Mountain Apartment featuring a fireplace and panoramic views toward the ski area.
What connects the different categories is the interior concept.
Natural materials play an important role throughout the rooms.
Wood, stone-inspired surfaces and warmer neutral colours create the mountain atmosphere, while the furniture and lighting keep everything contemporary.
This is exactly the direction I like in modern Alpine-style hotels.
Too much rustic decoration can quickly make rooms feel dated. Flora avoids that.
Instead, the rooms have a clean and comfortable appearance with enough visual character to remind you that you are in the mountains.

Deluxe Suite with Terrace
A good choice for couples who appreciate having private outdoor space.
In summer, having a terrace becomes particularly valuable. Sitting outside surrounded by the cool mountain atmosphere is one of the pleasures of staying in Borovets during the warmer months.
Deluxe Suite with Park View
This option focuses more on the surrounding greenery and is an attractive choice if you prefer forest views.
Wellness Suite
One of the more distinctive categories.
The private sauna makes this particularly appealing during winter, when returning from a day on the slopes directly to your own wellness space feels like a genuine luxury.
Chalet Prestige
Designed to create more of an intimate mountain-residence atmosphere.
Luxury Mountain Apartment
The most appealing category for travellers wanting more space. The apartment adds a fireplace and panoramic views towards the slopes, making it especially attractive for longer stays or a romantic winter getaway.
The Wellness Suite: A Particularly Interesting Choice
For couples planning a winter stay, the Wellness Suite deserves particular attention.
Having your own sauna transforms the room from simple accommodation into a more private retreat.
After skiing or spending several hours outside in the Rila Mountains, there is a real benefit to being able to return directly to your suite and relax without immediately heading back into a public wellness area.
It also suits Flora’s broader boutique-hotel philosophy.
Rather than creating luxury only through public spaces, some of the experience is brought directly into the accommodation.
For a romantic Borovets weekend, I would personally put the Wellness Suite high on my list.
The Relaxation Area: One of Flora’s Highlights
If there was one area of Flora Boutique Hotel that particularly stood out to me, it was the relaxation zone.
Located on the rooftop, it is designed as a more intimate wellness retreat rather than a massive resort spa.
The facilities include:
- Indoor Jacuzzi
- Outdoor Jacuzzi
- Finnish sauna
- Infrared sauna
- Steam bath
- Relaxation areas
- Fitness facilities
The Jacuzzi and sauna facilities are reserved for guests aged 18 and above. A fitness area and an indoor swimming pool located close to the hotel are available to guests of all ages.
The rooftop position makes the area particularly appealing.
Mountain wellness works best when the landscape forms part of the experience.
And here, the panoramic setting adds exactly that.
During summer you are surrounded by forest and mountain scenery. In winter I can imagine the outdoor Jacuzzi becoming one of the hotel’s signature experiences, especially when Borovets is covered in snow.
The relaxation zone normally operates between 10:00 and 20:00, with individual access outside those hours possible by prior arrangement with reception.
Massages and treatments
Flora also offers a selected menu of massages and therapies.
I like the decision to keep the wellness concept relatively focused.
Not every boutique property needs to recreate the enormous spa facilities of a 300-room resort.
For Flora’s size and positioning, an intimate wellness environment makes much more sense.
ROOTS Restaurant at Flora Boutique Hotel
Dining is another area where Flora Boutique Hotel is clearly trying to create its own identity.
The hotel’s restaurant is called ROOTS Restaurant & Bar.
The concept centres around seasonal flavours, Bulgarian ingredients and a modern interpretation of local culinary traditions. The restaurant currently operates from 07:00 until 23:00.
The name ROOTS is appropriate.
Rather than creating another international hotel menu that could exist anywhere in the world, the culinary philosophy looks towards Bulgaria and the surrounding landscape.
That is something I increasingly appreciate when travelling.
Luxury hotels should not remove you from a destination.
They should help you understand it.
ROOTS draws inspiration from Bulgarian gastronomic traditions, local nature and seasonal produce. The kitchen is led by Chef Veselin Kalev, and the concept specifically highlights small local producers and modern culinary techniques.
Atmosphere
The restaurant has the same visual language as the rest of Flora.
Natural materials dominate.
The fireplace reinforces the mountain character, particularly for a winter stay, while the contemporary design prevents the room from feeling overly traditional.
It works equally well for a relaxed breakfast and a more refined dinner.
Breakfast at Flora Boutique Hotel
Breakfast is included in the hotel’s standard accommodation rates.
Guests receive a healthy buffet breakfast together with additional premium selections from the à-la-carte menu.
This combination makes sense for a boutique property.
A buffet provides convenience, especially if you want to start hiking or skiing early, while cooked-to-order dishes make breakfast feel more personal.
For me, breakfast is one of those small areas where a luxury hotel can genuinely distinguish itself.
You don’t necessarily need an enormous buffet.
Fresh ingredients, good coffee, quality bread and a few carefully prepared dishes are far more important.
The ROOTS Brunch Experience
One concept that deserves a separate mention is the hotel’s brunch.
ROOTS has created a six-course brunch menu built around seasonal ingredients and relaxed service.
At the time of writing, the complete menu is priced at €79 per person.
The current selection demonstrates the more ambitious side of the kitchen.
It includes dishes such as colourful cherry tomatoes with fresh cheese, Taggiasca olives, watermelon and basil; roast beef with poached eggs and béarnaise; grilled gilt-head bream with avocado and asparagus; pork tenderloin with duchess potatoes and morels; and a honey mousse with white chocolate and truffle.
This is not a conventional hotel brunch.
It feels closer to a tasting experience.
And that is potentially interesting even for guests who are not staying overnight.
A leisurely weekend brunch followed by time in the mountains could become a good reason for Sofia residents to visit Borovets outside the traditional ski season.
Room Service from ROOTS
Guests who prefer dining privately can also order from ROOTS to their suite.
Room service currently operates daily from 12:00 until 23:00.
Again, the philosophy is not simply burgers and club sandwiches.
The room-service concept follows the restaurant’s broader approach to Bulgarian ingredients and seasonal cooking.
This becomes particularly attractive if you book one of the more spacious apartments or a Wellness Suite.
There are evenings when staying in, enjoying a good bottle of wine and having dinner delivered to your suite is exactly what a mountain escape should be about.
Prices and Packages at Flora Boutique Hotel
Flora Boutique Hotel regularly offers packages around different seasons and special events.
Standard room rates include accommodation, breakfast, access to the adults-only Jacuzzi and sauna facilities, use of the fitness and nearby indoor pool, Wi-Fi, parking, insurance and VAT.
I recommend checking current prices directly before booking because mountain hotel rates naturally change according to season.
Winter, Christmas, New Year and special-event periods can differ considerably from summer prices.
What I particularly like is that Flora is developing experiences around the stay rather than simply discounting rooms.
A good example is its Champagne Weekend.
Christmas Packages at Flora Boutique Hotel
Borovets naturally changes completely during December.
Once snow arrives, the pine forests, ski slopes and colder temperatures create precisely the atmosphere many travellers are looking for during Christmas.
Flora promotes dedicated Christmas packages incorporating accommodation, dining and access to its wellness facilities.
The design of the hotel should work especially well during this period.
Fireplaces, natural wood and mountain views already create the right foundation.
Add snow outside and the atmosphere becomes very different from the summer experience we had.
New Year at Flora Boutique Hotel
New Year’s Eve is traditionally one of the most popular periods in Borovets.
For travellers who enjoy skiing during the day but want a more polished atmosphere in the evening, a boutique property such as Flora provides an interesting alternative to the larger resort hotels.
If you are considering Christmas or New Year, however, I would book well in advance.
The hotel is intentionally smaller than the major Borovets properties, meaning desirable categories such as the Wellness Suite and Mountain Apartment are naturally limited.
Teambuilding and Corporate Retreats
Flora also positions itself for corporate stays and team-building experiences.
This actually makes considerable sense.
Mountain destinations are often excellent for smaller company retreats because people naturally disconnect from the office environment.
Activities can be combined with meetings, restaurant experiences and outdoor programmes.
For senior leadership teams, creative workshops or smaller company gatherings, I would personally favour a boutique environment over a huge conference hotel.
It creates more interaction.
And because Borovets is accessible from Sofia, companies do not necessarily need complex travel arrangements for a two- or three-day retreat.
Summer in Borovets: An Underrated Time to Visit
Our visit took place in August, and this deserves its own section.
I think many international travellers still associate Bulgarian mountain resorts almost exclusively with winter.
That misses half the story.
Summer in Borovets can be beautiful.
The forest is intensely green, the mountain air is fresh and temperatures are much more comfortable than in Bulgaria’s cities during the hottest weeks of the year.
There is hiking.
There are mountain walks.
There is cycling.
And there is the very simple pleasure of sitting outside with coffee and not needing an itinerary.
For couples looking for a peaceful weekend from Sofia, this may actually be my preferred time to visit.
Autumn should be equally attractive when the forest changes colour.
Winter brings more energy and activity.
Summer brings space.
Winter in Borovets
Of course, winter remains central to the Borovets experience.
The resort offers approximately 58 kilometres of ski slopes, and Flora’s location close to the Yastrebets lift becomes a considerable advantage once the ski season begins.
A typical winter day could look something like this:
Breakfast at ROOTS.
Walk to the lift.
Several hours skiing.
Return to the hotel.
Sauna.
Outdoor Jacuzzi.
Dinner beside the fireplace.
That combination explains why the property may appeal particularly strongly to couples looking for a more intimate alternative to the traditional ski resort.
Sustainability and the Hotel’s Longer-Term Vision
There is another aspect of Flora Boutique Hotel worth mentioning.
The project incorporates several sustainability measures, including energy-efficient systems, reduced plastic use, recycled materials, a green roof and charging facilities for electric vehicles.
I am always cautious about hotel sustainability claims because the word has become overused.
But practical measures are more meaningful than marketing slogans.
Energy efficiency, waste reduction and EV charging are tangible improvements.
The hotel has also been conceived with a broader ambition to support tourism and employment in the Samokov and Borovets region.
Service and Personal Attention
Service is particularly important in a boutique hotel.
Our impression during the visit was very positive.
The atmosphere felt relaxed rather than formal.
That is appropriate for Borovets.
You want efficiency and professionalism, but you also want to feel that you have escaped the city.
The hotel’s 24-hour reception and emphasis on personalised assistance support that philosophy.

I would particularly recommend Flora Boutique Hotel for:
Couples
Especially those looking for a romantic mountain weekend without travelling far from Sofia.
Skiers who prefer boutique hotels
The location close to the lift is a major advantage.
Wellness travellers
The rooftop adults-only relaxation area adds real value.
Food-focused travellers
ROOTS is more ambitious than the average mountain-hotel restaurant.
Weekend travellers from Sofia
Borovets is close enough for short escapes.
International visitors exploring Bulgaria
Combining Sofia, Borovets and perhaps Rila makes an excellent curated itinerary.
Small corporate groups
The boutique setting lends itself well to executive retreats and team-building trips.
What I Liked Most
There were five things that particularly stood out during our visit:
- The contemporary mountain design
It feels warm without becoming overly rustic.
- The rooftop relaxation concept
Especially the indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi facilities.
- ROOTS Restaurant
The focus on Bulgarian ingredients gives the property more personality.
- The location
Being only about 50 metres from the Yastrebets lift will be a major advantage during ski season.
- The scale of the hotel
It feels much more personal than a large resort property.
What Should You Know Before Booking?
No hotel is the right choice for every traveller.
Flora Boutique Hotel is best understood as a boutique mountain hotel, rather than a huge full-service spa resort.
If your priority is an enormous wellness complex with dozens of pools and treatment rooms, there are larger resort properties that may fit that requirement better.
The adults-only rooftop relaxation zone is intentionally more intimate.
The main indoor swimming pool is located immediately nearby rather than forming part of the rooftop spa itself.
Personally, I do not see that as a disadvantage.
It is simply important to understand the concept before arriving.
The hotel is about accommodation, food, design, location and a smaller wellness experience.
Is Flora Boutique Hotel Worth Staying At?
Based on our visit, yes.
Particularly if you appreciate smaller luxury hotels.
Flora Boutique Hotel brings something slightly different to Borovets.
Its strongest qualities are not exaggerated displays of luxury.
They are the location, the natural materials, the peaceful atmosphere, thoughtfully designed accommodation, ROOTS Restaurant and the rooftop wellness concept.
And together they create a coherent experience.
I would be particularly interested to return during winter.
Seeing the same spaces surrounded by snow, using the outdoor Jacuzzi after skiing and having dinner beside the fireplace would provide a completely different perspective on the property.
Flora Boutique Hotel vs Larger Borovets Hotels
This is perhaps the easiest way to decide whether Flora is right for you.
Choose Flora if you value:
- Individual atmosphere
- Contemporary interiors
- Personal service
- Gourmet-focused dining
- Smaller wellness spaces
- Stylish suites
- A romantic setting
Choose a larger resort hotel if your main priorities are:
- Extensive family infrastructure
- Very large swimming-pool areas
- Large-scale entertainment
- Multiple restaurants under one roof
- Extensive conference facilities
Neither approach is automatically better.
They simply serve different travellers.

Flora Boutique Hotel represents an interesting new direction for luxury hospitality in Borovets.
Instead of trying to compete through size, the property concentrates on atmosphere.
There is thoughtful design.
There are comfortable and distinctive suites.
There is an attractive rooftop wellness area.
And ROOTS gives the hotel a culinary identity rather than simply providing the obligatory hotel restaurant.
Most importantly, the property feels connected to Borovets.
This is still unmistakably a mountain hotel.
You see the forest.
You feel the cooler air.
You are steps away from the ski infrastructure.
Yet the experience feels contemporary rather than traditional.
During our August visit, I particularly enjoyed experiencing the quieter summer side of Borovets.
For anyone visiting Bulgaria who wants to combine Sofia with a few days in nature, Flora Boutique Hotel offers an attractive luxury getaway without requiring a long journey.
And if I were planning a winter return, I already know what I would choose:
A Wellness Suite, a full day on the mountain, some time in the outdoor Jacuzzi and dinner at ROOTS afterwards.
Sometimes luxury is not about having more.
It is about getting the important details right.
Flora Boutique Hotel is clearly heading in that direction.
