If you are wondering how to start a blog but are faced with endless questions, then I can help you answer the most basic queries that can help you get over the initial process and set up your blog. In this post, you will be able to learn how to create your blog, and you won’t need any technical skills to achieve your goal. There is no need to be worried, as the process is faster and easier than you think! Along the way, I will answer a number of questions that you might have, so you can get an idea of how to manage things.
When I created my first blog, I didn’t have much experience and it took me a long time to learn the process with the help of Google. In this guide, I will take you through all the steps, so you do not have to go looking for help like I did. The steps are simple and easy to follow, and there are only six of them. You do not have to worry about endless details and will be able to get started in a short time.
The Main Six Factors
1. Pick a Niche. 2. Choose a platform. 3. Find the right host. 4. Pick the perfect domain name. 5. Get your blog up and running using WordPress. 6. Design and start using your blog.
We will take on each step at a time, so you do not feel overwhelmed or get confused.
Why Should You Start a Blog?
There are numerous reasons why you should consider starting your own blog, and the most common ones include:
Making money online, so you can work for yourself. However, the process might be hard; but it is indeed fruitful when done the right way.
Creating your own blog allows you to become a published author, and you are able to attract online readers. That is a lot better and easier than getting your work published by an agency and hoping for people to buy your product. This way once you have a following, you get to start selling ebooks online.
In today’s world working online is the best exposure, as there are a countless number of people who search for things along. Along with that, you will be able to get your message out there to the right people.
Online blogging is a great way to share your story, to help build a community and encourage others to get things done.
If you can see yourself in on the other categories, then you will be able to make the most out of your dreams. Simply keep on reading, and you will be able to get your blog up and running in no time.
Step 1: What is your blog about?
If you are a part of any organization, business, or company then you can blog related to the services or products offered by them. In addition, you can even promote the cause that is close to your heart.
However, if you are an individual with no ties then you have a more flexible approach when choosing a topic. The main things you need to consider are:
- Is it something you enjoy? As you will soon get bored of something you are not interested in.
- Who is looking for such content? Is there even a market for the kind of blogs you are after. Will you be able to get readers?
- Which is why you should blog about things that require discussion, or dialogue. This will allow you to get people involved and keep them coming back for more. Pick something talk worthy, as you will be blogging for a long time.
Once you have established the topic you feel strongly about, then you can easily establish your niche. However, I guarantee it that someone has already thought about it and are currently blogging about it. Which is why you need to add something extra to the mix, that will help you attract readers. As long as the content you are offering is fresh and useful you will be able to attract readers.
The main aspect you need to focus on is that your blog should be the go-to place for the topic or niche you have focused on.
Step 2: Choosing the perfect platform
If you wish to learn how to drive, you need a vehicle. Similarly, if you wish to blog, you need a platform. Currently, there are a number of blogging platforms that you can choose from such as:
Much like anything in the world, these platforms come with a range of pros and cons. However, WordPress offers the most to bloggers. It is flexible, offers a helpful community, is completely functional, and offers endless ideas and tools to help your blog.
I have been using and recommend WordPress to any new blogger. As you will be able to get the best possible results when working with WordPress. In addition, you get two choices with WordPress. You can get a hosted platform or a self-hosted platform.
The hosted WordPress platform is referred to as WordPress.com. These are free to use, but your income potential is minimum. On the other hand, self-hosted WordPress platforms are called WordPress.org. These cost a little more yet offer you a free hand and offer more income potential.
In this guide, you will learn how to get started with a self-hosted WordPress.org blog. This is the platform that is preferred by most, as it offers endless possibilities. However, you do not have to keep the “.org” at the end of your blog name. You can use anything you like, or that is available in your range.
Step 3: Finding the perfect host, Bluehost
Once you have a platform set in place, the next thing you need is a host. By getting your blog hosted, you will be able to share it with users from all around the world. When you get a host, you get server space, that saves all that you have to offer, and allows people to access it when they search for the data you have posted online. Understanding the process is easy but picking the right hosting company can be a bit tricky. As each one offers a different range along with the basic, and it all comes down to what you are looking for in a hosting company.
I myself, have been using Bluehost for more than 8 years now, and it has worked wonders for me. It offers a good rate, services, and above all it’s simple to use.
When you reach their page, you will be required to select a plan. There are currently three plans offered by BLUEHOST and each one comes with a different price tag and services.
If you are just getting started, start with the Bluehost basic plan; as you can upgrade at any time.
- Basic Hosting Account: Less than your morning latte, this is definitely one of the least expensive hosting accounts out there. You can host a single website with up to 50GB of space, which is more than plenty by the way, unmetered bandwidth, so you’ll never be charged overaged and 100MB of email storage.
- Plus Hosting Account: The next tier up is the Plus account, which includes unlimited space and an unlimited number of domains, just in case you want to host more than one website. You also receive unmetered bandwidth and unlimited email storage for not much more than the Basic account.
- Prime Hosting Account: This account is their best value. Not only do you get everything that you get with the Plus account, but you also get website backup, which can come in very handy by the way, and private domain registration. They’re also throwing in $80 per year worth of extras here.
Then you will be required to pay for Domain privacy, which is highly recommended. This comes free of charge with Prime and will help keep your website secure.
Step 4: Picking a domain name
If you already have some idea of what domain name you will be using, then this process will go smoothly. However, it will take time if you don’t have any clue. The domain name you pick should be short, memorable, and something that focused on your website. However, if you already have a registered domain you can add it to Bluehost without my issue. The process I am about to explain is similar to both when you are using an old domain or registering a new one.
Start by entering your account info and move on to the next page. Here you will be required to put in all the details, and information will be sent to your email id. From there you can move onto choosing a plan. Keep in mind that you can pay for a year, two years, or even five years. They currently do not offer a monthly plan, so the minimum you have to pay is for a year.
When it comes to add-ons you only need to get domain privacy protection. This will help you keep your personal information private. If you are using your business information you should be okay. But if privacy is an issue, then you should register for it. Once you have set it in place and paid for it, you can simply forget about it and move on. After skipping through the add-ons, you will be taken towards the password screen. Make sure, that you pick a secure password. As it will be the key to your blog. Once it’s set you can log in and get started on your blog.
Step 5: How to get started with wordPress
Getting started with WordPress is fairly simple and will only take a short time to get started with. All you have to do is log in with Bluehost, and you can get started with picking the theme.
In your Bluehost control panel, you’ll find a simple one-click logo icon with the description “Install WordPress,” that will help guide you along in the process.
All you have to do is select a few key details such as your site name, admin username, password and email address, and you’ll be well on your way to being up and running very quickly. Simply look for the WordPress icon towards the bottom of your hosting control panel screen once you’ve setup your account.
Also, keep in mind that for security purposes, you should choose a difficult username and password for your blog admin when going through the setup process. Don’t use the username “admin” and don’t choose an easy-to-crack password. You’ll be doing yourself a disservice by doing that.
Step 6: Just design and get started
Congratulations as you can get started working on your blog. I suggest you look around and check out a few designs before you settle on one. This way you will be able to get the perfect look for your blog.
It is not difficult, so not hesitate to try a few things. If you ever run into any trouble you can easily get help from the WordPress community; As most questions are already answered. If not, you can ask, and it shall be answered. A great way to get to know your blog and get to manage it yourself. This way you will never have to depend on anyone, and you will be the one building your blog from the ground up.
The feeling you will get and the experience is something you will simply love, and it will help you grow as a blogger!
